The White House |
I went to Washington DC on vacation for a week back at the
end of April. I flew with Virgin Atlantic
from Heathrow airport and 8 hours later landed at Washington Dulles
airport. I stayed at the Residence Inn
hotel near the Pentagon.
I used the Washington Metro a lot, I got the SmarTrip Card, it’s
like a London Oyster card for traveling around Washington. The weather was
sunny and warm on our first day when I went to the White House and the
Eisenhower Executive office and later went to Chinatown to have lunch at a restaurant,
the food was OK. The next few days were
very wet, but I still went to the Capitol, walked along the National Mall, saw
the National Monument which is an obelisk shaped structure, the Reflecting Pool
up to the Lincoln Memorial, saw the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the way there.
The next few days I visited some Smithsonian museums, the National Museum of
the American Indian, the National Gallery of Art, the Freer museum. It was all stunning.
I went to Georgetown, which had very old houses. The town is lovely and had lots of shops and
boutiques. I also visited the second
biggest cathedral in the world. It was
situated in a stunning area; all the houses were beautiful and looked very
expensive.
The day before I left I went to the Arlington cemetery. On
top of the hill you could see all the famous monuments, such as the Capitol, the
Reflecting Pool, the Lincoln Memorial, etc.
There were lots of flowers and plants everywhere, and because it was
spring, the colors were amazing.
On the last day, because my flight was late at night, I went
to Alexandria, which is an old town along the Potomac River. It is a charming town, not unlike a European
seaside resort, with all the small restaurants and boutiques.
Unfortunately, I had to leave; I wished I could have stayed
a little longer. I will certainly come
back one day.
